FAA 2024 By the Numbers

2024 was one of the busiest years ever for air travel. How many flights? The busiest days? The busiest airport? The leading cause of delays?

According to the FAA’s preliminary data, there were 16.8 million flights in the nation’s airspace in 2024 – an increase of about 500,000 from 2023. Only in 2019 did we see more aircraft in U.S. airspace.

Thursdays continue to be the most popular air travel day of the week, with more than 2.58 million Thursday flights in 2024. Thursdays made up the top 10 busiest days of the year as the number of flights eclipsed 52,000 on each of those days; July 25 was the busiest day, with 54,338 flights.

Fridays were also popular for air travelers as 2.54 million flights traversed the skies on all those days combined.
